Short Messaging Service

Short message services (SMS) are rapidly becoming must-have service requirements for today's subscribers. Person-to-person messaging must provide rapid, immediate communications among users. In addition to popular person-to-person messaging services, carriers also need the ability to offer server-to-person services, such as televoting, ring-tones, missed call alerts and whitelist/blacklist services.

All of these service offerings are "sticky" applications, which, once adopted, can drive usage and demand throughout user communities. Thus, it's important that carriers find cost-effective and flexible platform for developing and delivering these services. They need platforms that meet today's service requirements, but can expand quickly as the demand grows—and that can adapt to evolving network architectures and technologies.

Today's messaging solutions need the ability to support a wide variety of messaging features, including person-to-person messaging and server-to-person services. SMS offers a lucrative source of new revenue, and the ability to customize, enhance and rapidly roll out these services to meet new market demands can dramatically accelerate the rapid adoption of these services, which in turn reduces subscriber turnover and creates new revenue streams.

While SMS has been widely deployed throughout the world, its growth has forced service providers to evaluate how messaging systems are deployed in their networks in order to ensure that they can scale cost-effectively without affecting their SS7 networks. SMS services require the ability to handle very large numbers of messages potentially delivered across multiple networks.

The Cantata Value Proposition

With its flexible, modular architectures, Cantata has the ability to support different network architectures in order to achieve cost-effective performance of SMS services. Our platforms support SMS services across any networks, so service providers can transition seamlessly from TDM to hybrid to all-IP networks.

Flexible Services
An open API and standards-based platforms deliver the flexibility service providers need to create and deliver SMS as well as enhanced messaging services (EMS) and multi-media messaging services (MMS). Carriers can enhance SMS applications with rich media services to attract new subscribers and increase revenues. They can offer highly customized messaging services and build stronger relationships with subscribers that reduce churn and provide ongoing revenue streams. By supporting industry standards, the Cantata open architecture enables carriers to deploy messaging solutions in service nodes and media servers or application servers across both TDM and IP networks.

Cost Effective
Cantata’s unparalleled flexibility reduces costs by enabling carriers to deploy platforms where it makes the most economic sense. By distributing the SMS function closer to mobile switching centers, service providers can offload the SS7 network and build a more flexible network architecture that delivers the same services at a much lower cost. Cantata has long been providing industry-leading platforms for a variety of messaging and other enhanced mobile services. Standards-based platforms reduce the capital and operational costs of Cantata platforms, an Cantata offers platforms that enable the cost-effective delivery of messaging services across TDM, hybrid and next-generation IP networks. Carriers can be assured that by deploying a Cantata-based solution, they are getting a reliable, field-proven solution that will enhance their network service offerings—both today and tomorrow.

Scalable Messaging
The use of SMS continues to increase, and Cantata offers scalable platforms that support pay-as-you-grow expansion of messaging services. Service providers can invest in the equipment they need today while retaining the ability to cost-effectively scale to support the ever-increasing number of SMS transactions as well as the introduction of new EMS and MMS services.

Cantata Product Offerings

  • The Cantata Excel Converged Services Platform (CSP) 2090 is a high-performance, carrier-grade open platform for profitable enhanced telecommunication services. The platform bridges existing wired and wireless networks with next-generation IP networks, integrating protocols for IP, TDM and IN. It allows service providers to deploy flexible applications and offer scalable SMS, EMS and MMS services. With its multi-function design, flexible API and support for up to 2,048 ports, the CSP 2090 allows service providers to quickly bring to market profitable new messaging services.
  • The Cantata Excel Multi-Services Platform (MSP) 1010 is a cost-effective, high-performance, multi-functional signaling server platform for SS7 and IP networks. It is highly flexible, supporting TDM and IP interfaces as well as fixed and mobile signaling protocols. The MSP 1010 offers service providers a small-footprint, modular, scalable and cost-effective media resource platform with complementary signaling capabilities. It is designed for deployment in legacy, convergent, fixed or mobile networks as a classic IN/AIN service node or service switching point. The MSP 1010's highly scalable architecture allows service providers in competitive environments to start small and grow capacity in step with demand, making it particularly attractive for alternative network operators or emerging markets.
  • The Integrated Media Gateway (IMG) 1010 is unique in its ability to serve as an SS7 signaling server and media gateway with media processing capability. It performs two-way protocol conversion between circuit-switched networks like the PSTN and packet-switched networks to enable the rapid and cost-effective delivery of SMS services. With up to 768 channels in a 1U footprint that can be racked and stacked—plus software licensing for cost-effective in-service growth—the IMG 1010 is the solution for a wide variety of media gateway needs. It reduces the cost and complexity of implementing new services by combining PSTN and packet signaling, SS7 continuity tests, and media (tones and announcements) in a cost-effective, easy-to-manage and compact platform.
