Libercell Deploys Excel-based SMS-C Solution from Argent Networks
- Argent Network’s SMSC Lowers Deployment Cost of SMS Service and Enables Incremental Growth –
Hyannis, Mass. - February 7, 2005 – Excel Switching Corp. (www.ExcelSwitching.com) and Argent Networks Ltd. of Auckland, New Zealand (www.argentnetworks.com) announced today the successful deployment of ArgentSMSC by LIBERCELL, a leading wireless carrier in Southern Africa for the delivery of SMS services throughout Liberia. Argent’s Excel-based SMS solution delivers cost effective Short Message Service Center (SMS-C) functionality for LIBERCELL’s wireless network customers, enabling them to efficiently exchange short text messages between mobile telephones in their own network and other mobile networks.
In Liberia, post civil war reconstruction is actively underway, and telecommunications infrastructure throughout the country is rapidly being rebuilt, expanded, and migrated to next generation infrastructure. “As a leading provider of mobile services in this region, it is very important for us to offer our subscribers advanced communications services first to maintain our competitive edge,” said Azzam Sbaity, CEO of LIBERCELL. “The modular design of the Excel-based Argent SMS-C solution allowed us to quickly get the SMS service up and running and deployed to our subscribers at a very reasonable cost. The solution works within our legacy infrastructure and also with next generation 2.5G/3G infrastructure, so we are future proof.”
Argent Networks is a leading developer of customer care and billing solutions for fixed, mobile, broadband, and next-generation telecommunications markets. Argent has been providing Liberia’s Atlantic Wireless Inc., LIBERCELL’s operator, with mobile billing, customer care services, and prepaid Internet services, all developed and running on the Excel CSP 2090. Using Argent’s latest SMS technology and the flexibility of the Excel CSP 2090, LIBERCELL has implemented a highly scalable, fault tolerant SMS-C solution. The Argent SMS-C solution enables mobile carriers like LIBERCELL to deploy signaling intensive services like SMS with a low entry price point, which allows them to incrementally scale the service as subscription grows.
Argent’s SMS-C application supports load sharing and can be configured to be partially redundant and very small, all the way up to very large, fully redundant, and carrier grade. As a result, carriers can buy only what they need today, yet be in position to grow quickly and cost-effectively. In addition, Argent’s solution serves as a gateway between networks for SMS, with support for GSM, CDMA, and TDMA standards, and for a variety of interconnect protocols including SMPP, UCP, CIMD2, and OIS. The CSP 2090 can also support advanced MMS functionality.
Based on Java/J2EE, the Argent SMS-C also supports SIP, SS7, and IN/SS7, as well as Camel 2, 3, and 4. This powerful combination allows carriers the flexibility to add new services cost-effectively either through in-house design or by leveraging industry standards to support third party applications.
“It’s an exciting time for countries like Liberia that are growing and building out their networks so citizens can enjoy the communication services that other countries have had for some time,“ said Peter Meredith, general manager of marketing and business development for Argent Networks. “These carriers need flexible technology that offers them options for future expansion at an affordable price. Excel enables us to differentiate Argent by handling all network communications and allowing us to deploy in traditional SS7 networks and high capacity IN networks. This offers our customers many alternatives to achieve the desired results.”
“Our partnerships with industry leading application providers like Argent really demonstrate how powerful the Excel enhanced services platform can be, especially when it comes to rolling-out new services in new regions,” said JC Murphy, Excel president. “In this case, Argent’s ingenuity is smartly supported by Excel’s modular architecture, and as a result, citizens of Liberia are able to enjoy added convenience and personalization with their mobile services that other mobile users in other countries have had access to for quite some time.”
